The future of communication technologies was discussed at the ‘6G Workshop’ hosted by Istanbul Medipol University.
The third of the ‘6G Workshop’ was held with the organization of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Istanbul Medipol University. Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan, Vice President of Defense Industries, Dr. Celal Sami Tüfekçi, President of the Presidency Digital Transformation Office, Dr. Ali Taha Koç, senior executives from companies such as Türk Telekom, Vodafone, Turkcell, and many academics attended. During the workshop, five different panels were held under the titles “Turkey’s Transition to 5G”, “Indigenous Ecosystem in 5G and Beyond”, “IoT Impacts in Vertical Sectors”, “Preparation for 6G Domestic Ecosystem”, and “Academic Overview for 6G Vision”. Devices developed by the public and private sectors were also displayed during the all-day workshop. ASELSAN sponsored the organization where communication technologies that have a significant impact on globalization were discussed.
ARSLAN: WE MISSED 5G; WE SHOULD BE THE LEADER IN 6G
Making the opening speech of the workshop, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Arslan from Istanbul Medipol University School of Engineering and Natural Sciences . said that Turkey is late in 5G. Arslan said: “This workshop aims to create 6G awareness, bring together stakeholders, and cooperate on patent and technology production. As a country, we should participate in the patent, R&D, and production stages of 6G and even be the leader in contributing to the standards. It seems to me that we are a little late with 5G. To not repeat the same mistake in 6G, we need to talk about 6G a lot. The whole world is focused on information and communication technologies. The future of the world is entirely here. The concept we call the internet of things is no longer a dream.”
SAYAN: TECHNOLOGICAL COMPETENCE IS A DEVELOPMENT INDICATOR
Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan said: “Communication, an area that will change the course of the world; affects all elements, especially education, health, and tourism. We have experienced great progress over the past decade. Technological competence is an indicator of development for countries. Our goal is to use 5G with the highest localization rate in 2023.”
KOÇ: 4G WAS THE LAST TECHNOLOGY FOR PEOPLE
President of the Presidential Digital Transformation Office, Dr Ali Taha Koç, also used the following statements: “Today we have to make a decision. We have two ways. The challenge is to produce technology locally and nationally. This is a complicated path. The other way is simpler; buying and using products of foreign origin. We are moving towards an era where machines talk to each other and work in harmony. And as Turkey, we must take our place strongly in this world.”
TÜFEKÇİ: WE HAVE SOME HANDICAPS TO SWITCH TO 5G
Defense Industry Vice President Dr. Celal Sami Tüfekçi said that communication technologies are always ahead of defense technologies. Expressing that there are some handicaps to switching to 5G, Tüfekçi said: ”There is infrastructure among our handicaps. To say that we have fully transitioned to 5G, we need to establish the fiber infrastructure. We continue our work intending to equip Turkey with secure communication infrastructures. In addition to making the existing 4.5G technologies developed with domestic and national resources sustainable, we are working to produce innovative solutions at world standards for 5G and beyond. I find Today’s workshop very meaningful at this point.”
