First place at MEDICON 2026 for two of our undergraduates

Furkan Aktay and Mert Mestçi have taken first place in the IFMBE Scientific Challenge at MEDICON 2026 — the Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing — held in Siena, Italy from 14 to 17 September 2026.

They entered as the ITU_PIMI_LAB team with the paper “Two-Stage Ensemble and Metadata Fusion Framework for Skin Lesion Classification”, advised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlkay Öksüz of Istanbul Technical University, and presented the work at the conference.

The award is made by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering. Both are undergraduates here, which is what makes it worth saying twice.
