SUMMARY:Seminar: Laser Applications in Biomaterial Science
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Today\, lasers find many application fields including the medical sciences\, such as: cancer therapy\, skin welding\, dental treatments and eye surgery. On the other hand\, laser applications in biomaterials are of great interest to researchers since the lasers can be used to manufacture the implant itself directly\, or\, they can be used to alter the physical and/or chemical properties of biomaterials. In this seminar\, you will see some examples which were done by lasers in order to alter the surface properties of implant materials and also the future ideas. \nSpeaker: Dr. Cagri Kaan Akkan graduated from Physics Department of Kocaeli University in 2007 and continuously finalized his master studies at the Laser Technologies Research and Application Center of Kocaeli University under the supervision of Prof .Dr. Arif Demir in 2009. Same year\, Dr. Akkan started to work in INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials / Germany as visiting scientist. In May 2014\, he had his PhD degree in Natural Sciences from the Medical Faculty of Saarland University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohamad Hammadeh. During his stay in Germany\, Dr. Akkan experienced various approaches to use with biomaterials. Since January 2014\, Dr. Akkan returned back to his home after acceptance of his TUBITAK-2232 project and now continues his researches in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of Boğaziçi University. Dr. Akkan has 2 international patent family applications and 16 published scientific articles.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Functional Micro/nanostructures and Nanocomposites for Structural Applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For the production of the advanced nanocomposites and nanostructures\,thermoplastics and thermoset polymers are used widely due to their unique physical and chemical properties\, which are tailored to various applications in the present work. The dimensions and structure of these polymeric materials are tailored by single and multi-axial electrospinning technique. Recently\, core-shell micro-/nanofibers and spheres have gained great interest due to their great potential applications\, such as textiles\, filtration\, catalysis\, reinforcement and biomedical use. The integration of nanomaterials and encapsulating agents into electrospun structures provides additional functionalities such as biodegradability\, self-healing property\, improved mechanical and thermal properties\, higher surface area\, and higher electrical conductivity. For the production of advanced type of nanocomposites\, the distinguished properties of graphene are combined with the structural properties of polymers by the proposed simple and low-cost fabrication technique by in-situ and electrospinning and electrospraying techniques. \nSpeaker: Dr. Saner Okan received her BSc degree in Chemistry at Middle East Technical University (METU)\, Turkey in 2005\, her MS degree in 2007 and PhD degree in 2011 in Materials Science and Engineering programme at Sabancı University. She was supported by full scholarships during both MSc and PhD programmes. Dr. Saner Okan was selected as Scifinder Future Leader in 2010 by Chemical Abstract Service. Dr. Saner Okan worked in Sabancı University’s start-up company of NANOTEGO A. S. as technical project manager. She still works as a senior researcher at Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center. She is also co-founder of NANOGRAFEN Nano Technological Products Chemistry\, R&D\, Consulting\, Industry and Trade Limited Company. She has 11 articles published in international journals\, 2 patent applications and more than 30 conference papers. She has involved in different national and international projects about nanocomposites and nanomaterials.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Cancer Bioinformatics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Completion of the human genome project and recent developments in high throughput molecular technologies have enabled the detailed genomic\, epigenomic and transcriptomic profiling of biological specimens in unprecedented detail for exponentially declining costs. This situation has resulted in the generation of a vast amount of data\, which has great potential to improve human health outcomes substantially. Analysis of this complex\, noisy\, and contextdependent data is challenging; hence Bioinformatics or Computational Biology has emerged as a novel field for efficient utilization of this valuable data. This presentation will include the basic concepts in cancer bioinformatics and highlights from Dr. Baysan’s recent research activities. After providing a brief molecular biology background; current technologies\, trends and major challenges in cancer bioinformatics will be presented. These will be followed with Dr. Baysan’s recent findings in Cancer Subtyping\, Evalua tion of Experimental Cancer Models and Intra-Tumor Heterogeneity. \nSpeaker: After obtaining his B.S. from Bilkent University in Computer Science in 2003\, Dr. Mehmet Baysan completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas in 2005 and 2008\, respectively. After his Ph.D.\, he worked for a year at the Management Department of University of Toronto as a post-doctoral fellow. During graduate school and his first post-doctoral fellowship\, the focus of his research was developing optimal solutions for problems in new application areas\, based on emerging technologies. With this aim\, Dr. Baysan studied major problem solving techniques in algorithms\, graph theory and combinatorial optimization. In his research projects\, he applied these classical problem-solving techniques to problems that are critical for major applications in wireless networks and supply-chain systems. In 2010\, Dr. Baysan switched his research focus to the area of computational biology as a post-doctoral fellow at the Neuro-Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the NIH\, USA. After his fellowship\, he moved to NYU Cancer Institute and later to Weill Cornell Medical College as an Associate Research Scientist in 2013 and 2015\, respectively. Since 2010\, his research has centered on improving our understanding of cancer genomics with the use of computational tools. Dr. Baysan is especially interested in the integration of multiple data sets with different data types for efficient interpretation of available data to aid cancer diagnosis and treatment.
